Springfield’s economy is based on health care, manufacturing, retail, education and tourism, and there are more than 11,940 businesses are licensed in Springfield.

Health Care - Springfield is a regional medical center with five hospitals and more than 2,080 beds. Nearly 900 physicians and surgeons, 170 dentists and 6,000 nurses practice in Springfield. Springfield’s health care system offers every specialty listed by the American Medical Association.

Education - Springfield offers a variety of higher education opportunities with student enrollment of more than 42,000. Missouri State University, the second largest university in the state, has enrollment of more than 19,000 students. Other colleges are Ozarks Technical Community College, Drury University, Evangel University, Central Bible College, Baptist Bible College, Springfield College, Cox College of Nursing, St. John’s School of Nursing, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Forest Institute of Psychology, Vatterott College, Bryan Career College and Webster University.

Manufacturing - The city’s largest manufacturers include Kraft Foods, SRC Holdings, Hutchens Industries, Willow Brook Foods, Paul Mueller Co., Loren Cook, General Electric, Positronic Industries, Dayco/Carlisle Power Transmission, Northrup Grumman Interconnect Technologies and Aaron’s Automotive.

Retail - Springfield is a regional shopping center serving a large geographic area including Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas. It is the third-largest market in the state and one of the top 150 U.S. Markets. There are 35 major shopping centers, including two enclosed malls.

Tourism - More than 2.2 million people visit Springfield annually. Tourist attractions include Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium, Fantastic Caverns, Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and Air and Military Museum of the Ozarks.

Other major employers include CoxHealth, St. John’s Health System, Wal-Mart Stores, and Springfield Public Schools.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,563, and the median income for a family was $38,114.
